With apologies to Woody Guthrie, the Canadian Gaming Summit now rightfully belongs to the Canadian gaming industry as a whole. The Summit, while retaining the essential annual trade show elements as originally conceived and produced, has fundamentally changed in nature since being acquired by the Canadian Gaming Association and MediaEdge Communications in 2006.

First and foremost, proceeds of the event are now channeled back into the Canadian Gaming Association to fund our programs of outreach, advocacy and research on behalf of the industry.

This has assisted in the production of groundbreaking research – including the first ever measurement of the very substantial and important economic impacts of our industry on the Canadian economy (scheduled to be updated in 2010-2011) and the meta-analysis of more than 20 years of problem gambling research worldwide, which determined that it is a serious problem for one percent of the general population no matter where, when, how or by who measured with or without the presence or increase of legalized gambling.

It has also allowed us to pursue our advocacy projects, such as opposing Senator Jean Lapointe’s various Bills to restrict the location of electronic gaming devices, working to change the Criminal Code to allow single-event betting and interacting with FINTRAC.

Of equal importance, the Summit has in every year since acquisition been expanded, refined and improved to provide content relevant to all sectors of our industry, moving well beyond its roots as a vendor-based event.

We have reached out to all elements of the industry in Canada and beyond our borders – legal, regulatory, First Nations, horse racing, property operations, lottery, surveillance and security, bingo and charitable, food services, the internet, mobile and more – to develop relevant and cutting-edge content – information and education sessions that are being increasingly seen and appreciated as being pertinent and necessary to participants at every level of the Canadian gaming industry.

This content development process is ongoing as we continue to engage all elements of our industry from both the public and private sectors to ensure that the Summit offers the content that people consider important for the education and development of their organizations and for the industry at large.

The original Summit core components, the show floor and industry-wide networking opportunities, remain essential.

The show floor is the place that game, technology, equipment and service suppliers present their latest and greatest offerings to the people who can initiate and approve purchases. It’s the best opportunity for new companies to introduce their products and services in a very cost and time-efficient way, and a very effective medium for established companies to interact with existing and potential new customers at the appropriate levels.

The Summit brings together all elements of our industry from all across the country for three days of information sharing and getting together. This happens at scheduled events like golf, the Opening Reception, Summit Soiree and Awards Reception and Charity Gala Dinner as well as informally day and night throughout the conference. The Summit is the best place to renew industry relationships and develop new ones.

This Summit is truly your Summit. I urge each and every one of you to join with us in continuing to develop its content so that it remains the single “must attend” event for our Canadian industry.
